Søstrene Grene, the Danish retail chain, has signed a long-term lease for its first distribution center (DC) outside Denmark at Prologis Park Venlo DC9. Developed in close collaboration with Prologis, the global leader in logistics real estate, this custom-designed, all-electric facility will create local jobs, support the retailer`s business growth and carbon reduction goals in Europe, and contribute to Venlo’s economy. Set for completion in Q3 2025, Venlo DC9 is being built to BREEAM Excellent and WELL Gold standards, underscoring its sustainable and employee-centered design.
Closer to the end-customer
Family-owned Søstrene Grene offers a wide assortment of products within home interiors, hobby items, kitchen supplies and children’s toys and more. Since opening its first store in the Netherlands in 2012, Søstrene Grene’s popularity has grown steadily, leading to 18 locations across the Netherlands and offering an online shop today.
Søstrene Grene will move into Prologis Park Venlo DC9 in autumn 2025. The all-electric ~45,000-square-meters building will offer direct connectivity to the highway and various rail and ship terminals. This will enable the company to bring its products closer to Dutch and European customers while minimizing logistics carbon emissions. Developed in collaboration with Prologis, which has a long history of sustainable development, the warehouse will meet high environmental standards and will reflect both companies' sustainability goals.
“We’re grateful for the warm reception Søstrene Grene has received in the Netherlands, and this new DC reflects our commitment to serving more customers across Europe more efficiently,” says Mikkel Grene, Group CEO of Søstrene Grene. “Prologis was a strategic partner choice—their expertise in sustainable construction solutions and extensive property portfolio align perfectly with our goals. Our new distribution facility in Venlo is built to enhance our logistics, reduce environmental impact, and create local jobs in a space designed with employee wellbeing and ecological responsibility in mind.”
Building design with a positive impact on CO2 emissions
Venlo DC9 will be constructed with a focus on operational and embodied carbon reduction and support a circular building approach. Key features include:
- Renewable Energy: Solar panels will be installed to supply renewable energy to the all-electric building.
- Design to Disassemble Steel Construction: The steel structure can be easily dismantled, as beams are connected with screws and bolts, facilitating future reuse.
- Recycled Steel: The building’s steel structures and coatings will be made from recycled materials, reducing the use of virgin resources.
- Lower-Impact Flooring: The building will incorporate innovative flooring solutions that reduce carbon emissions, using materials with lower environmental impact and partially recycled content to minimize resource use.
“We are pleased to have Søstrene Grene as a partner, as our values and ambitions for creating positive impact are well aligned,” says Gina Helmold, VP, Head of Capital Deployment & Leasing Benelux at Prologis. “We are dedicated to their success and committed to delivering a facility that supports their growth and sustainability goals. With Venlo DC9, we’re not only meeting their logistics needs but also providing a thoughtfully designed facility that strengthens both the regional economy and through lo wering CO2 emissions the environmental resilience.”
